A feather bonnet I've just made. It's made out of brain tanned and commercial tanned hide, hand painted feathers, ermine tubes, horse hair, brass buttons, copper beads and old italian glass beads.<br />
In the last picture a detail before the bonnet was completed with the cap covered with plumage and painted feathers and the cotton string inside the painted feathers.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
A charm just finished. It's cut out from pounded buffalo hide (pounded to preserve a tiny hair like you can see on the left of the picture). I added some deer toes, painted with mineral pigments, brass beads, two old red white heart beads and two tiny shells I carved in a buffalo hoof shape.</div>

<span style="color: red;">Un mito della tribù Alabama.</span><br />
<h4>
<a name='more'></a>...
Nutrimi!".

E ora Fuoco appartiene all'uomo."<br />

<span style="color: red;">Fire</span></div>
<h4>
A Myth from the Alabama Tribe retold by S.E. Schlosser</h4>
In the beginning of the world, it was Bear who owned Fire. It warmed Bear and his people on cold nights and gave them light when it was dark. Bear and his people carried fire with them wherever they went. One day, Bear and his people came to a great forest, where they found many acorns lying on the forest floor. Bear set Fire at the edge of the forest, and he and his people began eating acorns. The acorns were crunch and crisp and tasted better than any other acorns Bear and his people had ever eaten. They wandered further and further away from Fire, eating the delicious acorns and seeking out more when the acorn supply grew low.<br />
Fire blazed up merrily for awhile, until it had burned nearly all of its wood. It started to smoke and flicker, then it dwindled down and down. Fire was alarmed. It was nearly out. "Feed me! Feed me!" Fire shouted to Bear. But Bear and his people had wandered deep into the forest, and then did not hear Fire's cries.<br />
At that moment, Man came walking through the forest and saw the small, flickering Fire. "Feed me! Feed me!" Fire cried in despair. "What should I feed you?" Man asked. He had never seen Fire before. "I eat sticks and logs and wood of all kinds," Fire explained. Man picked up a stick and leaned it on the North side of Fire. Fire sent its orange-blue flames flickering up the side of the stick until it started to burn. Man got a second stick and laid it on the West side of the fire. Fire, nourished by the first stick, burned brighter and stretched taller and eagerly claimed the second stick. Man picked up a third stick and laid it on the south side of Fire and laid a fourth stick on the East. By this time, Fire was leaping and dancing in delight, its hunger satisfied. Man warmed himself by the blazing Fire, enjoying the changed colors and the hissing and snapping sound Fire made as it ate the wood. Man and Fire were very happy together, and Man fed Fire sticks whenever it got hungry. A long time later, Bear and his people came back to the edge of the forest, looking for Fire. Fire was angry when it saw Bear. It blazed until it was white-hot and so bright that Bear had to shade his eyes with both paws. "I do not even know you!" Fire shouted at Bear. The terrible heat rolling of Fire drove Bear and his people away, so they could not take it and carry it away with them. And now Fire belongs to Man.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
--------------------------------------</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I noticed that one of the most read pages in this blog is related to weaving loom. A frame is an extremely simple and in its basic form can be made with a branch. But the industry tends to make us believe that things are more complicated than they are, and so if we want an object we have to buy it. Below how to build a simple loom for the beads using four pieces of wood and some nails. If you want you can also use the frame of some old picture. The nails should be as many as the number of threads that will make up your work plus two. On these last two nails will pass the two wires placed on the two sides of the weaving.</div>

<br />
<a name='more'></a>Questi canti e riti sono parte integrale dell'oggetto e vengono trasferiti (in alcune tribù) insieme allo stesso.
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Some necklaces, amulets, etc.. all linked to the Native American's concept of "medicine". A medicine can help to ensure success in hunting, in war or in love and often, to work it needs to be accompanied by songs and specific rites. These songs and rituals are an integral part of the object and can be traded (in some tribes) together with it. It's for this that many 'sacred medicines' were given to whites in historical times. The amulet, devoid of its rites, was simply an object that could be sold freely.</div>

<span style="text-align: start;">Un mito Ojibwa.</span></div>
</div>
<span style="text-align: start;">
<span style="text-align: start;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span><br />
</span><br />

<span style="text-align: start;">---------------------------</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"There once was a big lake where Indians lived all around it. In the middle of the lake, there was a big island of mud, which made it impossible just to paddle straight across. So if someone in one village wanted to go to the one on the opposite side, they would have to paddle all around the edge of the lake. They stayed away from the island of mud because a bad manido.</div>
One day, one of the villages was holding a dance, and the people from the other side of the lake started out in their canoes, coming around the edge of the lake. Two women who were going started out late, after everyone else had gone. The two women were sisters-in-law and one of them was rather foolish. She was steering the canoe and headed straight across the lake to the island of mud. The other warned her not to do it, but it didn't do any good. The first girl carried a little cedar paddle with her but did not use it for paddling. She carried it everywhere with her. As they got to the middle of the lake, they started to cross the island of mud, and in the center of the mud they saw a hole of clear water. The water was swirling around like a whirlpool, and as they started to cross that bit of open water, a panther came out and twitched his tail across the boat and tried to turn it over. The girl picked up her little cedar paddle and hit the panther's tail with it. As she hit it, she said, "Thunder is striking you." The paddle cut off the panther's tail where she had hit it, and the end dropped into the boat. It was a solid piece of copper about two inches thick. The panther ran away through the mud, and they laughed hard. One girl said, "I guess I scared him. He won't bother us again." When they got across, the girl gave the piece of copper to her father. The copper tail of the underwater panther had magical powers. Everyone wanted a little piece of the tail to carry for luck in hunting and fishing and people would give her father a blanket for a tiny piece of that copper. Her family got rich from the tail of the underwater panther".<br />

A new charm I'm working on. It's a knife or big arrowhead made out from obsidian (from the north west of the U.S.) wrapped with brintanned hide and beaded with old Venetian beads. Deer spurs painted with Plateau red ocher are still to be fixed.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWkDnqU1dkyVGJoE10aAz2NyBWYsVVZ7XCmbeDfwURICiGOZjeh1z9d9wdu89szS79SB25ppfGTvbcobtwmOVrc0Yvje0q984TUcFXRmSKnXmKfwp4gP92zWpDioI80oMbsbw2OUC5B58/s1600/loop1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="111" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWkDnqU1dkyVGJoE10aAz2NyBWYsVVZ7XCmbeDfwURICiGOZjeh1z9d9wdu89szS79SB25ppfGTvbcobtwmOVrc0Yvje0q984TUcFXRmSKnXmKfwp4gP92zWpDioI80oMbsbw2OUC5B58/s320/loop1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
-------------------------------------</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div>
The mutilation of dead enemies is often mentioned in historical and ethnohistorian stories about the Plains state of war. The practice of scalping was the most common form of mutilation, the meaning of which was written a lot about. A scalp was recognized simply as a trophy, "an emblem of victory" to return to the village to enjoy and dance it yet "(Grinnell)</div>
<div>
Other body parts were used for the same purpose. Upon returning from a military expedition scalps and other body parts as trophies were taken by women and prepared for the celebration of the victory. Whenthere was the opportunity even the women played an active role in the mutilation of dead enemies. Eastman describes a Sioux woman who "cut off the hands and feet of some small child Chippewa children and began to work them and sew them to a necklace."</div>
<div>
"The action of older women to emasculate the dead body of the enemy males is well documented in the writings of other keen observers of the state of war of the Plains Indians from 1790. Truteau Jean-Baptiste, a French merchant and expert observer of tribes of the Middle Missouri, described the furious mutilation of dead enemies by older women: "I saw these old mad ... cutting off hands and parts of dead enemies manly, to stretch herself around the neck or ears and dance with them in front of all the entrances to the tents of the village "(Ewers 1997).</div>
<div>
The Assiniboine ... (Kennedy 1972), the Blackfeet (Ewers 1958), the Cheyenne (Bourke 1892, Powell 1969), the Cree (Ewers 1958), The Crow (Ewers 1958; Denig 1930:491; Ruger 1888), the Pawnee (Grinnell 1923), the Sioux (Carrington 1896, Eastman 1849, Goodrich 1997, Marquis 1986) and Ute (Hamilton 1907) are all tribes of which have been reported to cut the hands of the enemy during hostilities.</div>
<div>
Edward Denig, a trader in the northern Plains during the mid-19th century, had many good contacts with the Plains Indians and wrote on the mutilation of body parts:</div>
<div>
"There is no religious reason behind the performance of such acts, and they are not made with a view to appease the souls of dead friends or as a sacrifice to the Great Mystery, nothing in their words and actions in these situations suggests something like that, instead everything is just insult to the dead enemy, and wild glory and revenge to suit themselves. "</div>
<div>
In the North West Lewis and Clark were surprised to discover the use of the cutting off of hands and keep your fingers as trophies by a group Chinookan on the Columbia River, near Dalles.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">

"Culturally violent conflict between social groups sinks into the prehistory of the Plains and the Great Basin of North America. Evidences of conflicts on a small scale for the area or because of raids, from which flowed mutilation or death, and both of wars on a large scale with destruction of villages and massacres were detected both archaeologically and across the study of human remains ....<br />
The predominant type of conflict varied across time and places, being less frequent in the Plains during the Archaic period and that of the Woodland, and more common during the period of the "Village". The cruelty of tribal conflicts increase dramatically during the period when the protohistoric and historical Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and other groups migrated from the East to the lands already occupied in the Plains.<br />
In the Great Basin the state of war was prevalent during the last millennium, when the "Numic" population including the Paiute, Ute, Shoshone and Comanche expanded their territory through military force.<br />
Numic groups were hostile to each other, but they were "militarily aggressive" and war with "virtually all their neighbors" (Sutton 1986). Moving of the Shoshoni to the Plains begin around 1500, while the Ute and Comanche entering in the southern Plains in about 1700. The local residents were driven out or eliminated.<br />
The practice and the cultural importance of historical war between the tribes of the Plains is well documented by several classic works on Blackfeet, Cheyenne and Pawnee. For some tribes the "main occupation was war" (Grinnell 1923b: 6). For men, the prestige and leadership among the tribes could be obtained only by success in war, and for the tribe itself, the plunder of horses became an integral part of the economy.<br />
Taking trophies humans as part of the war in the Plains and Great Basin had also deep roots.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
One way Native people used to create necklaces was to wrap a tongue of hide (or even cloth) with small sized beads. The thread was sewed at one end of the hide tongue and 5/6 cm of beads were strung in it. This thread with the beads was then held in place holding it with the teeth while the hide tongue was rolled. The result is a very dense and uniform decoration that I don't think I've ever seen for sale in Italy. In these pictures the basic pattern and some shots of a necklace I made.</div>

"When I was a young man I went up on Heart Butte and fasted and prayed for seven days. I was dressed in very old clothes and continually called upon the sun to have pity on me. At last, the sun appeared before me as a very old man, gave me a drum and one song. He explained to me that this drum and the song were to be used in making clear weather. I kept this drum many years. On the fourth of July, 1902, while our people were in camp preparing for the sun dance, there came a great rain which threatened to flood the whole camp. I beat my drum and sang my song which kept the water away from my tipi; but the water went into all the other tipis. Then I made up my mind to cause the water to drown out the tipi of my rival. So I kept my mind on that one thing, drummed and sang the song, until at last the water rose on my rival and forced him to move. In the following year, I received another drum from the sun. One night in my sleep the sun appeared to me as an old white-haired man, very poor,and carrying a drum on his shoulder. This man taught me a new song and
the use of this drum. Its power is very great. When I am drumming and singing a song the people gather around, but they can only get within a certain distance as the power of the drum holds them back. It has the same power over all living things, even the grass".<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
I've often wondered why people like those who lived in the Northwestern area of the United States known as the Plateau have developed a so deep passion for the brightest colors. All their art is constructed by bright shades covering the spectrum of the most vivid range of colors. After all this is an area where the sky is gray most of the year, and forests make it even more gray. I also asked this to a friend born in that area, a unique native artist with a deep knowledge of those traditions, and her response was that maybe those so bright colors just served to remind the few bright days of summer, when the cold and rain gave way to a sun that warmed the men and their art.<br />
