War Charm

Collane realizzate con la tecnica qui descritta- Plateau- seconda metà dell'800

Uno dei metodi usati fra i nativi per creare collane era quello di avvolgere la striscia di pelle (o anche di stoffa) da decorare con perline di piccole dimensioni. Il filo va fissato cucendolo ad una estremità del laccio e si procede poi ad infilare su di esso 5/6 cm di perline. Il filo con le perline era poi tenuto fermo fra i denti mentre la striscia di pelle alla base della collana era fatta girare. Il risultato è quello di una decorazione molto fitta ed uniforme che credo di non aver mai visto in vendita in Italia. In queste foto lo schema di base ed alcuni passaggi di una collana da me realizzata.

One way Native people used to create necklaces was to wrap a tongue of hide (or even cloth) with small sized beads. The thread was sewed at one end of the hide tongue and 5/6 cm of beads were strung in it. This thread with the beads was then held in place holding it with the teeth while the hide tongue was rolled. The result is a very dense and uniform decoration that I don't think I've ever seen for sale in Italy. In these pictures the basic pattern and some shots of a necklace I made.

"Quando ero molto giovane sono salito su Heart Butte ed ho digiunato e
pregato per sette giorni. Ero vestito con abiti molto vecchi e pregavo continuamente il sole affinchè avesse pietà di me. Alla fine, il sole apparve davanti a me come un uomo molto vecchio e mi diede un tamburo e una canzone. Mi spiegò che questo tamburo e la canzone dovevano essere usati per far arrivare il bel tempo. Io tenni questo tamburo per molti anni. Il 4 di Luglio 1902, mentre la nostra gente era accampata per preparare la Danza del Sole, ci fu una grande pioggia che minacciò di inondare tutto il campo. Ho suonato il mio tamburo e cantato la mia canzone e questo mantenne l'acqua lontana dal mio tepee, ma l'acqua colpì i teepe di tutti gli altri. Poi ho concentrato la mia mente perchè l'acqua trascinasse via il teepe del mio rivale. Così ho continuato a tenere la mia mente concentrata su quella cosa, continuando a suonare il tamburo e cantare la canzone, finché alla fine l'acqua raggiunse il mio rivale costringendolo a scappare. L'anno seguente, ho ricevuto un altro tamburo dal sole. Una notte, nel sonno, il sole mi apparve come un vecchio uomo dai capelli bianchi, molto povero, il quale portava un tamburo sulla spalla. Quest'uomo mi ha insegnato una nuova canzone e l'uso di questo tamburo. Il suo potere è molto grande. Quando suono questo tamburo e canto la canzone che mi è stata data la gente si riunisce intorno, ma possono avvicinarsi solo fino ad una certa distanza perchè la potenza del tamburo li trattiene. Esso ha lo stesso potere su tutte le cose viventi, anche l'erba".

"When I was a young man I went up on Heart Butte and fasted and prayed for seven days. I was dressed in very old clothes and continually called upon the sun to have pity on me. At last, the sun appeared before me as a very old man, gave me a drum and one song. He explained to me that this drum and the song were to be used in making clear weather. I kept this drum many years. On the fourth of July, 1902, while our people were in camp preparing for the sun dance, there came a great rain which threatened to flood the whole camp. I beat my drum and sang my song which kept the water away from my tipi; but the water went into all the other tipis. Then I made up my mind to cause the water to drown out the tipi of my rival. So I kept my mind on that one thing, drummed and sang the song, until at last the water rose on my rival and forced him to move. In the following year, I received another drum from the sun. One night in my sleep the sun appeared to me as an old white-haired man, very poor,and carrying a drum on his shoulder. This man taught me a new song and the use of this drum. Its power is very great. When I am drumming and singing a song the people gather around, but they can only get within a certain distance as the power of the drum holds them back. It has the same power over all living things, even the grass".

I Colori della Memoria

Mi sono spesso chiesto come mai dei popoli come quelli che abitano quella zona del Nord Ovest degli Stati Uniti detta del Plateau abbiano sviluppato una passione così profonda per i colori più vivaci. Tutta la loro arte è costruita su tonalità brillanti che coprono lo spettro più vivo della gamma dei colori. Dopo tutto quella è una zona dove il cielo è grigio la maggior parte dell'anno e le foreste rendono tutto ancora più grigio. Ho chiesto questo anche ad una amica originaria di quell'area, una straordinaria artista nativa con una profonda conoscenza di quelle tradizioni, e la sua risposta è stata che forse quei colori così brillanti servivano proprio a ricordare le poche giornate luminose dell'estate, quando il freddo e la pioggia lasciavano spazio a un sole che scaldava gli uomini e la loro arte.

I've often wondered why people like those who lived in the Northwestern area of the United States known as the Plateau have developed a so deep passion for the brightest colors. All their art is constructed by bright shades covering the spectrum of the most vivid range of colors. After all this is an area where the sky is gray most of the year, and forests make it even more gray. I also asked this to a friend born in that area, a unique native artist with a deep knowledge of those traditions, and her response was that maybe those so bright colors just served to remind the few bright days of summer, when the cold and rain gave way to a sun that warmed the men and their art.

La Stella del Mattino

Da "Ceremonial Bundles of the Blackfoot Indians" di Clark Wissler, pubblicato su Anthropological Papers of the American Indians, American Museum of Natural History :
"Un amuleto Piegan più complesso ha un bottone in ottone nella parte superiore a simboleggiare la Stella del Mattino, l'elemento ricurvo rappresenta la "Donna del Sole" (la Luna). Lungo i bordi dell'elemento in rame ci sono dodici chiodi in ottone, a rappresentare le stelle. I piccoli campanelli rappresentano invece gli ammassi stellari, anche se le informazioni raccolte su quest'ultimo punto non sono definitive".

"A more complicated Piegan charm has... "The brass button at the top stands for the morningstar; the curved crosspiece, the sun woman (the moon). Along the edge of the latter were twelve brass nails, representing stars. The bunch of four small bells is said to stand for star clusters, though on this point our information is not definite".

Uno charm da me realizzato basandomi su quello descritto. L'elemento a forma di mezza Luna è ricavato da una vecchia pentola in rame.
